Our itinerary for the tour is as follows:
The N1 leads you in an easterly direction out of the mother city. We will take a detour over Du Toitskloof Pass, your first mountain pass of the journey, and let the towering rock walls and the deep kloofs of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains envelop you. This scenic route is an invigorating beginning to the day. Stop at the top and take in the vista that extends all the way to Cape Town and beyond (including the iconic Table Mountain).
We then travel on Route 62, the longest wine route in the world. We will stop at one of the farms for lunch and a tasting, before heading on to our overnight stop in Barrydale, where we will have a welcome dinner!
After a leisurely breakfast we continue on Route 62. Our first stop is Ronnie’s Sex Shop, a biker’s favourite. The quirky name is a result of a friendly joke that turned into a brilliant marketing tactic. After refreshments, we continue along Route 62, tackling the Huisrivierpass before arriving Oudtshoorn. After lunch we will do a tour of the Cango Caves, and time permitting, ride the magnificent Meiringspoort with its towering sandstone cliff walls and breathtaking rock formations, before checking in to our overnight accommodation.
If there was not time to ride Meiringspoort yesterday, this will be our first priority today, before riding down the Outeniqua Pass and on to Knysna. The first leg of the pass is a series of sweeping S bends that lead to the summit. We stop at the ‘4 Passes’ viewpoint, named after the four passes visible from the impressive viewpoint: The Voortrekker (now the Cradock) Pass, which provided farmers with a steep and challenging shortcut over the mountains in their ox-wagons; the Montagu Pass; the Railway Pass, which was used by the steam locomotives during the first part of the 20th century; and the most recent Outeniqua Pass.
The route along the N2 from George into Wilderness, which is flanked by golden beaches on one side and an emerald forest on the other, always gets your heart racing. This lovely piece of the Garden Route continues past serene countryside and a series of lakes as we head towards Knysna, where we will check into our overnight accommodation.
We then take a ride to the Knysna Heads viewing platform, before returning to the lagoon, where we will board a luxury catamaran and enjoy a sunset cruise and barbeque.
After a hearty breakfast, we ride to the Crags, just outside Plettenberg Bay, where we partake in a canyoning adventure, which includes abseiling, optional jumps, and a unique waterfall zipline.
We then ride into our overnight accommodation at Jeffreys Bay we can relax, and enjoy a barbeque almost on the beach.
This is an off day where you can relax at the beach, or explore the area at your leisure.
We leave Jeffreys Bay and head out to Addo. Once we have checked into our accommodation and had lunch we will embark on a guided afternoon game drive in the Addo Elephant Park before enjoying a delicious meal and sundowners at the hotel.
This is a long day in the saddle, and we take it easy with plenty of stops, exploring some of the quaint coastal villages we pass through. We do make a stop at Bloukrans Bridge, the worlds highest bridge bungy for those brave enough to jump, or you can do a skywalk tour on the bridge (highly recommended for those building up the courage to jump.)
After breakfast we tackle the world’s longest “over the ocean” zipline before riding to the southern tip of the African continent, where we will enjoy a picnic on the beach. We then ride through the towns of Elim, Baardskeerdersbos, Gansbaai, and Stanford enroute to our overnight accommodation in Hermanus.
Our final day takes us to Betty’s Bay for a quick visit to the African penguin colony. From there we ride the incredibly scenic Clarence Drive, on our way to Muizenberg, where we stop for refreshments. We then ride around the peninsula and head back to the Makani office via Chapmans Peak Drive, one of the most scenic routes in the Cape. We will have an end of tour celebration party at the Makani office.
Please be aware that this tour may need to change due to weather, road conditions or other factors. Please be flexible, but rest assured your tour leader will make the final decisions only after consulting with group members. Your safety is our priority.
