This 4-day bike trip provides a good balance of rugged mountain passes, countryside charm and exquisite coastlines, and showcases some of the best our beautiful region has to offer. We ride the passes of Du Toitskloof, Bainskloof, Helshoogte, Tradouw and Franschhoek, the stunning coastal roads of Chapmans Peak and Clarence Drive, visit the southern tip of Africa, and indulge in the vineyards of Franschhoek, amongst other delights.

Makani is Hawaiian for “wind,” but more importantly it represents an adventurous free spirit which is exactly what we are all about! We are passionate about motorcycles, adventure and fun.

Our itinerary for the tour is as follows:

Day 1: Cape Town to Franschhoek (200km)

We depart the Makani office and take the scenic route to Franschhoek, via the Du Toitskloof Pass, Slanghoek Valley, and Bainskloof Pass. We make a quick photo stop at Drakenstein Prison, where the iconic Nelson Mandela took the last steps in his “Long walk to Freedom”.

We then check in to our overnight accommodation and spend the rest of the day exploring some of the beautiful vineyards via the Wine Tram.

Day 2: Franschhoek to Agulhas(290km)

We leave Franschhoek and travel down the Helshoogte Pass to Stellenbosch. We make a visit to the Stellenbosch Village Museum where we will see four houses of historical interest and their gardens. Each of these beautiful homes represents a different period in the architectural development of Stellenbosch.

We then leave Stellenbosch and ride to Hermanus via the incredibly stunning Clarence Drive. We spend some time in Hermanus where we lunch, do some souvenir shopping, whale spotting (in season), before riding to Agulhas and the southern tip of Africa, where we overnight.

Day 3: Agulhas to Montagu (270km)

After breakfast we leave Agulhas and ride the short hop to Struisbaai Harbour, to see if we can spot the resident stingrays. We then ride via the Tradouw Pass to the world famous Ronnies Sex Shop (not quite what the name implies), where we will have some well deserved lunch and refreshments. We just need to keep some space in our stomachs for the best milkshakes in South Africa when we stop at Diesel and Crème in Barrydale.

It is then a short ride to our overnight stop in Montagu. After checking in to our accommodation we head off to the Bluvines District for some refreshments.

Day 4: Day 4 Montagu back to Cape Town (330km)

On this the last day of the tour, we take the scenic route back to Cape Town, riding the FranschHoek Pass enroute to the Southern Penninsula. We pass through the surfing mecca of Muizenberg, the picturesque St James, and Kalk Bay, before stopping for lunch at Simonstown. We will learn a bit about Able Seaman Just Nuisance!

We then ride around the peninsula past Smitswinkel Bay, through Scarborough, Misty Cliffs, Noordhoek, along Chapmans Peak Drive, over Kloof Nek and back to the Makani office, where we will celebrate the end of tour!
